邵葆丽教授:中国纪念泰戈尔获诺贝尔文学奖100周年系列活动

Dear Members,

You will be happy to know that after the Centenary Celebration of the Award ofNobel Prize to Rabindranath Tagore was inaugurated by the President ofIndia, Honorable Shri Pranab Mukherjee, in Visva-Bharati, Santiniketan, onDecember 19, 2012, in a grand ceremony, many more events have been held in China through the summer of 2013.

The first in the series was an International Conference on “From Tagore to Mo Yan: the Universality of One Hundred Years of Oriental Culture" that was organized by Tongji University, Shanghai, in collaboration with other Chinese and Indian institutions, and held in Tongji University, Shanghai, on June 1-2, 2013. Many distinguished scholars from India, China and other countries presented academic papers; the event was attended by dignitaries, and officials of China, who expressed their support and enthusiasm for this celebration. On this occasion, a special lecture on "Asia’s First Nobel and Santiniketan Seasons Through Gitanjali, a few ’Song Offerings’" was delivered by Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta,Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, with the accompaniment of Tagore’s music and poetry, performed by a cultural contingent from Sangit Bhavana, Visva-Bharati. Prof. Sun Yixue’s book on Rabindranath Tagore, entitled Tagore’s Trip to China, was also released during this Conference.

The second event was held along with the China-South Asia Think-tank Forum organized by the Yunnan Academy of Social Sciences in collaboration with and with the support of other Chinese and Indian institutions and was held in Kunming on June 6-8, 2013. On this occasion, a special lecture was delivered by Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta,Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati, on "Tagore’s Model of Holistic Education: From Grassroots to the Higgs Boson" and Tagore’s music was performed by the cultural contingent from Sangit Bhavana, Visva-Bharati.

In the third event, the Asian and African Studies Department of Peking University School of Foreign Languages, the Oriental Literature Research Center of Peking University, the India Research Center of Peking University, the Peking University Library and the Post Graduate Association of Peking University jointly organized a series of events such as the “Literature Day to commemorate the centenary of Rabindranath Tagore winning the Nobel Prize”, which were held on June 9-11, 2013. “The centenary of Tagore’s Nobel Prize for Literature Photo Exhibition” was held in the East Gate Exhibition Hall of Peking University Library, beginning from the morning of 9 June for 3 days, showcasing the film and television works based on Tagore’s writings. The Central Compilation and Translation Press released a collection of 3 books called “Tagore Series” to the public on this occasion. The students of Peking University Drama Society performed Tagore’s play “Post Office”.  All these events were received with enthusiasm and a large numbers of Tagore scholars and academicians from various universities and academic institutions participated.

 Last but not the least, an all China essay competition on “The Tagore in my heart” in being held at the initiative of the India Studies Centre of Shenzhen University and has received a warm popular response.

As the China chapter of the Centenary Celebration is coming to a greatly successful conclusion, we are now looking forward to the final phase in which events will be organized again in India in November, 2013. Information and invitation of the coming events will be circulated shortly.
